Duck Hunting Report – 11/1/2018

Great morning for the kids! This past weekend was the opener for youth hunters in the Mississippi River Delta. The winds were light, the ponds full of groceries and the ducks are down. My guest on Saturday was treated to a pond full of un pressured ducks. It did not take long for a limit to hit the water. The bag consisted of Bluewing Teal with one Greenwing Teal. We saw alot of other species too including gadwall, pintail, mottled and shoveler. Good times and can’t wait to do it again. Good luck out there!

Duck Hunting Report – 11/17/2017

My guests faced less than ideal conditions this morning at the Mississippi River Delta. Little to no wind and super low tides made for very challenging hunting. We set up in a small pond hoping that the birds would want to get away from big water and find some safety and security in the small waters. Not the case as there were few birds around at first light. A few stragglers started to appear and we got a few to commit and enter the pond. My guests shooting was good and we started to get a few into the bag. The bag consisted of Mottled, Greenwing Teal and Ringnecks. We could hear a boat or two running in the big waters to our North and thousands of birds filled the sky. The birds circled around a time of two and went straight back down in the same spots. It can be frustrating when you know that the birds are down, but they just would not move. The water kept getting lower by the minute and we called it off while there was still an inch of water left in the pond to allow for escape. I guess that is why they call it hunting! We will be back at it again this weekend. Good luck out there!

Duck hunting Report – 11/12/2017

Back in action again this morning. The conditions were very similar at the mouth of the Mississippi River Delta. Brisk winds and cool temperatures. Perfect duck hunting weather! We hit a small pothole with a perfectly set up blind for the conditions. As daylight broke, the birds started to pour into the pond. My guests shooting was top notch and limits were achieved quickly. The bag consisted of Pintail, Gadwall, Bluewing Teal and Greenwing Teal. We saw big flights of migrating ducks up high in the sky all morning. It is on is Southeast Louisiana! Good luck out there!

Duck hunting report – 11/11/2017

Near perfect conditions for the opening day of Louisiana’s Coastal Zone. Brisk winds 15-20 knots out of the Northeast and cool temperatures in the lowers 50’s had the birds migrating South. My property was loaded up with ducks and my guests limited out in mere moments. We bagged Mottled, Gadwall, Bluewing Teal and Greenwing Teal. The brisk winds and the pressure on the larger bodies of water had the birds diving into the small pothole we set up in. Looking forward to a banner year! Good luck out there!

Buras Teal Hunt – 9/30/2017

A beautiful morning in the Mississippi River Delta! The skies were clear, the wind brisk out of the Northeast and relatively cool with low humidity. The Blue Wing Teal were a blur as they darted through our pond before shooting time. We hunted a small pond next to some broken marsh that was just flooded. The birds wanted into the broken marsh, but had to pass over the pond to get there. Big mistake! My guests let them have it and we finished up with limits shortly after we started. We got to see 5 drake Pintail try to land on our decoys. It was early for them and they passed on through. Another great Teal season is now in the books. We are looking forward to a great big duck season which opens 11/11/2017. Good luck to all!

Delacroix Report – 7-13-2017

Perfect weather for a fish fry this AM. Cloudy, light winds and a reasonable tidal; range. We hit the same area where I have been catching speckled tout. The fish are still there and it was slow at first, but got much quicker once the spot set up. My guests were good fishermen and started to fill the box with specks. We were throwing live shrimp Carolina rigged on the bottom. We ran out of live shrimp and kept catching on artificial cocahoes on jigheads. The tide quit moving as the winds picked up from the West and the bite quit. We tried several other spots to find no water movement and no fish activity. We decided to head in early as the black storm clouds started to build up and we could hear the rumbling of the thunderbusters. Good luck out there this week!

Nutria Hunting Report – 2/13/2017

Perfect weather this morning in the Mississippi River Delta. Light northerly winds and cool temperatures made for a beautiful day. We hit the property a little after sunrise and we started encountering nutria rats right away. My guests missed the opportunity on the first few, but started to get the hang of it and we started bringing rats into the boat. We ended up with six, but had opportunities on over 20. I will be back after them next week. Good luck out there!

Nutria Hunting Report – 2/9/2017

The nutria were out and about this morning in the Mississippi River delta. My guest were treated to some stiff northerly winds, but in the small bayous it was not an issue. We started encountering nutria rats swimming across the bayous as soon as we got onto the property. Many gave us the slip by diving underwater and resurfacing a hundred yards away. Some gave us easy opportunities and my guests capitalized on those. We encountered 20 plus nutria during the hunt, but were only able to harvest a few. That means that I still have way too many rats on the property. I will be back after them next week. Good luck out there!

Duck hunting report – 1/22/2017

Back to the Mississippi River Delta today. Supper foggy this morning and made it quite challenging to get to the blind. We arrived in a big pond close to the river and got set up. It was slow at first due to the fog and intermittent rain. The weather cleared up a little and the birds started working the pond. I had 2 kids in the group and they were taking all of the shots. Very impressing shooting by the 11 and 14 year old boys. The action was hot and we started to fill the duck strap with Gadwall, Bluewing Teal, Greenwing Teal and Mottled ducks. The wind started picking up to 20 mph and unleashed rafts of floating water hyacinth. These rafts started to take out our decoy spread and we had to chase and reposition the decoy spread several times. We kept taking ducks, but the wind continued to pick up and water started to splash over into the boat from the waves. Time to get out while we were still good to float out. We were short of full limits today, but it was a great shoot and a great way to end the season! The Coastal Zone is done for this season, but we will be working the Eastern zone for another week! Good luck out there!

Duck hunting report – 1/21/2017

I got picked for a lottery hunt at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sherburne South Farm Wildlife Management Area today. I had applied for this hunt and got picked last year for the same weekend. The hunt had to be cancelled due to flooding. The hunt was rescheduled for this year and we were on. We arrived at the check station early and sat in the rain until the station opened at 4:30 AM. We checked in and drew Unit #2 to hunt for the day. We got to the Unit and waded out into the pond dragging our gear. We got the blind set up and decoys out and waited for that magical time. It was super slow and we only had 2 birds fly within shooting range. The pair of mallards passed over about 40 yards out and both hit the water and were added to the duck strap. Great shooting by our group, just wish that we would have had more opportunities to shoot. Interesting that we left consistent limits in the Mississippi River Delta to try something new in the Atchafalaya basin, but it was still fun. We will be back at it again tomorrow! Good luck out there.
