Delacroix Report – 3/14/2020

The trout really came on strong today. We bounced around a bit this morning as we hit several tried and true March hot spots. We had some success as the incoming tide got stronger, but the South East winds also got stronger too. We found a spot that I have not fished in 5 years that is perfect for a SE wind and a rising tide in March. We set up on the edge of a 12 foot drop off and cast artificial cocahoes on 3/8 ounce jig heads into the deep. We also tried dead shrimp carolina rigged. The dead shrimp helped to pick up several black drum in the 16-18″ class and one 50+ lb bruiser that we brought in on 12 lb test line and released to destroy someone else’s fishing equipment. The artificial lures were effective in loading up on speckled trout in the 12-14″ class. The bite was funny, but once we figured it out, it was every cast. The fishing is really taking off in the Delacroix Marsh and we are very happy about that welcome change. Good luck out there this week!

Delacroix Report – 3/7/2020

It was cold and windy this morning out of the Delacroix Marsh. The water was low and dirty most of the areas we fished. We were able to find some protected areas that offered some relief from the cold winds and had decent water conditions. We fished deep drop offs with a strong rising tide. We tried dead shrimp carolina rigged and on jig heads to catch sheepshead. Artificial cocahoes on 3/8 ounce jig heads were the lure of choice to pickup a surprising number of trout. The trout were in the 14-17″ class with no throwbacks. The trout wanted the lure slow rolled on the bottom with very little twitching. It was good to see the trout numbers and the quality. Looking forward to the next trip. Good luck out there!

Delacroix Report – 11/17/2018

Beautiful weather on Saturday! Light winds out of the East and cool temperatures made for a nice ride out and pleasant day on the water. There was little to no water movement which makes catching tough, but my guests were determined to make every cast count. We hit a couple of windward shorelines targeting redfish with live shrimp and dead shrimp carolina rigged. It was slow at first as the water temperature was hovering just above 55 degrees. Once the water warmed, so did the fish and the catching got better and better till we ran out of bait. We got into a redfish bite that was very strong. The fish were 14-29″ and good fighters. We tired of throwing back redfish as the bull reds were coming in 2 and 3 fish at a time. We moved down the shoreline slightly and got into the Black drum with some nice speckled trout mixed in. The drum were perfect size between 16-20″ and the trout were between 16-18″. We also had a few Sheepshead, Largemouth Bass AKA “Green Trout” and a flounder hit the shrimp. All in all a very good day on the water. It looks like the trout are starting to show up again which is a welcome sight. It has been a tough season on my usual target species. Good luck out there!

Delacroix Report – 7/19/2017

Early start in the Delacroix marsh this morning. We left the dock before daylight to cover much of the run before available fishing time was spent travelling. Good move as we hit the spot right as it was light enough to cast to the point. Not as much bait moving around as yesterday, but the action was soon hot. The trout were not quite as big either, but numbers count too! The fish did not want corks today and would only respond to live shrimp carolina rigged in the current. We worked over the specks until the skies started to loom dark and close. We decided to head out a little earlier this time to try for some redfish before we got soaked or run in early. We hit a cove with a small little cut that leads to a marsh pond. It typically holds a few reds. We worked the cut with live and dead shrimp 3 feet under corks. The redfish responded and we caught a pile of reds just over 18″. The weather moved in and finally we called it for a run back to the dock. Great day in a magical place – Delacroix! Good luck out there this week!

Delacroix Report – 7/14/2017

Afternoon trip today out of the Delacroix Marsh. We got a late start leaving the dock and only had a couple of hours to fish. We headed to the areas that I have been doing well only to find hardhead catfish. we decided to run to another area and work some drains along an outside shoreline with the falling tide. That proved to be the ticket for a box full of redfish in the 18-22″ class. These fish wanted dead shrimp 3′ under corks thrown right up against the marsh grass. As usual, the best action was right at dark when all my guests were hooked up at once as the reds were in a feeding frenzy. I like fishing late, but do not like the run back to the dock in the dark. The good fishing continues out of Delacroix! Good luck out there this week!

Delacroix Report – 6/10/2017

The good fishing continues in the Delacroix marsh. We hit the same area as yesterday and had similar conditions. The results were the same. The fat speckled trout were hungry and waiting for our live shrimp Carolina rigged offerings. The group had their fill of trout so we ventured off after some redfish action. We got to the area where the redfish have been hanging out and wow, the boats were everywhere. Apparently, the word is out. I could not fish where I wanted to be so we tried another area with much less crowding. We hit a spot with 2 small drains feed a duck pond. We threw live and dead shrimp under corks up into the drains. Bingo, redfish responded with crushing blows to the shrimp and in some4 cases the corks. Crazy good redfish action as we limited out in short order. Just another great Delcroix day! Good luck out there this week!

Delacroix Report – 8/6/2016

The small trout are everywhere! My guest got out early with me after some speckled trout and redfish. We hit a point on the edge of Breton Sound that has been good over the last few weeks. We started putting trout into the box pretty quickly working live shrimp Carolina rigged. We had to wade through many fish that were just under the minimum size limit. Good action. We kept picking away at the trout until a big humpback redfish crashed the party. This fish was only 25 inches long , but weighed 15 lbs. Apparently, the fish must have sustained a back injury early in life and made a recovery despite the odd appearance. The red was released due to pity and lives to fight another day! We stayed on the fish and picked through small fish to reach my guests quota and we headed in early to catch the Delacroix Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet. A good time was had by all! Good luck out there this week!

Delacroix Report – 7/7/2016

Excellent speckled trout fishing continues in the Delacroix Marsh! My guests were greeted with brisk winds out of the SW this morning. Usually a westerly wind is the kiss of death for fishing on the east side of the Mississippi river, but I found a spot where we were protected from the wind and the incoming tide set us up perfectly. The result was a full ice chest with fat trout in the 14-20″ class. These fish wanted live shrimp Carolina rigged and artificial cocahoes on jigheads slow rolled along the bottom. Most of the trout were caught in 8 feet of water, but some were pickup on the edge of the flat in 2 feet. The fish are on the edge of the big water right now and the action should continue until the next spawn is upon us. Good luck out there this weekend!

Delacroix Report 5/15/2016

Another tough day out of the Delacroix marsh. My guests brought bananas aboard the boat and it went downhill from there. We were cursed! We hit spot after spot only to catch small trout. We could not get away from them. Most of the keepers that we hooked were lost at the side of the boat. At least it did not rain and the boat performed well! I guess you cannot kill them every time. The weather looks shaky for the upcoming week and I have had to reschedule trips due to the impending storms headed our way. I will be back at it toward the end of the week. Good luck out there!

Delacroix Report 5/13/2016

The curse of the west wind strikes again! My guests were caught in the curse of the west wind today. The brisk wind had the water stained and significantly delayed the incoming tide. We hit a few falling tide spots and caught plenty of undersized speckled trout to keep a few. The fish were aggressive hitting the artificial cocahoes like they had not eaten in a while. The tide quit and we headed to a redfish spot to await the tidal turnaround. We caught 1 nice red, but they were not feeding in the slack water. We tried to wait out the tide, but it was taking forever to arrive. We decided to run outside to catch moving water which we found on the edge of the big water. We got into a good trout bite fishing plastics in 8 feet of water, but it did not last long. We decided to go back inside only to find that the area I wanted to fish was inundated with boats. People do not work on Fridays anymore? We found a good spot that was secluded and proceeded to get on the trout again, but they were mostly throwbacks. That was the story of the day, plenty of fish catching, but not as much fish keeping. Still great to be on the water and catching steady. The wind is to shift away from the West into the weekend and the good fishing should return. Good luck out there!
