The fishing is improving in the Delacroix marsh after last weekends storm and subsequent blow out tide. Monday’s trip resulted in a poor catch in less than ideal conditions. Cold weather, low tide, huge tidal range, Mississippi River water and dirty water covering the system made for poor fishing conditions.Thursday’s trip was a vast improvement. My guests from Mississippi were expecting some harsh fishing conditions, but found the water to be fishable in several areas of the marsh. The fresh water from the river has alot of the winter time holes disturbed. The best water was found in the lakes and rivers along the twin pipelines. We found trout feeding on the bottom in 12-15 feet of water. These fish were 12-18″ with a few throwbacks. They wanted artificial cocahoe minnows on a 3/8 ounce jighead bounced or slow rolled along the bottom. The hot colors were smoke, alvacado and glow. The fish were not aggressive at all and the strikes were extremely subtle. As the water temperature rose, the feeding activity picked up. We found a nice school of reds working bait on a flat adjacent to a hole. We worked them over with the same artificial lures. These fish were 16-18″ with quite a few 15 1/2″ fish. Still a good fighting fish! The weekend looks promising with slight winds and a good tidal range. The rain is not expected until Saturday night or Sunday morning which leaves a big window for fishing. The later in the day fishing has been better as the water temperature heats up.
